‘Y Seren Goch’ – an introduction

By the YSG Editor

In 2019, a small group formed in Merthyr called the Valleys Underground, in reaction to the liberal, capitalist conception of an independent Wales, and the ‘progressive’ movements who only existed behind a screen, and not in the real world.

Over these 6 years, many things have changed, the Valleys Underground became the Welsh Underground Network, and in 2023 voted to create a political party – Plaid Gomiwnyddol Cymru. The party needed a place beyond their own social media to draw together voices for socialist Welsh independence. A place where the argument for a Socialist Republic of Wales can be advanced.

We are a multimedia publisher which will look at the issues facing Wales, pick apart why Wales suffers so badly under the capitalist British state, and clearly articulate why we need a Socialist Republic of Wales.

We welcome all voices, not in a tick-box kind of way, but in a real practical sense. The future of Wales will be argued for by the most oppressed in Wales. Change will be made by those who most need it! This means we welcome minoritised people, first-timers, unemployed people and all oppressed writers.

Want to submit an article in Welsh or a heritage/minority language? Dim problem, our editor is learning Welsh, google translate is free and we have members of the team who speak Welsh, Kernewek and Gaeilge. Write in what feels comfortable to you. We can work it out and promise to publish in the language you submit in.

We have just launched a podcast – It’s Not Unusual, a riotous blast through Welsh working class history, our international links and our heroes and villains. Hosted by Liz and Joe, you will be gripped by the stories, howl with laughter at the jokes and ultimately learn a little something along the way. Check it out here: https://open.spotify.com/show/2lQhUYweBOeTIA2gOhp5IB?si=e2f47e7ba01241f0

As for why we’re doing this, we see a clear gap where we need to argue directly for socialism, for socialist-republicanism, especially when other outlets are clearly opposed to the concept that Wales could be run by the working class, for the working class.

We want this to be an outlet which anyone can submit writing to, we want to hear from different groups and individuals, build up dialogue and genuine discussion around how to achieve our goals. We will publish guest articles, arguments, letters, anything, from the varied and broad spectrum of people fighting for a Socialist Republic of Wales.
